What are the procedures for obtaining a liquor license?

All alcohol license applications must first be made to the State of Alabama, call 205-942-7955 for more information.
Bring a copy of the state application to the Hoover City Clerk's Office (205-444-7517) to make application for new ABC License or transfer. Please note that a new ABC License for a new location is a two-month process and must be approved by the City Planning and Zoning Commission and the Hoover City Council.For a transfer, the licensee must bring a copy of the state application to the City Clerk for City Council approval after a completed background and driving record check.

1. When do I need to get a City of Hoover business license?: All persons, firms, corporations, or businesses located inside the City of Hoover, or outside the city but conducting a trade, business, commerce, occupation, profession, exhibition, vocation, or performing services in the city are required to purchase a business license prior to beginning operations.

2. What kind of licenses are there and how much would a license cost?: Please see the License Schedule for license classifications and annual costs. In addition to the cost of the license there is a $5.00 issuance fee per license.

4. I have tax I collected on a sale or rental transaction in Hoover but do not have a tax or license account? How do I pay the tax?: If you are located outside Hoover but need to remit Hoover business taxes but do not have a business license or tax account with the City of Hoover, complete an Activation Of Jurisdiction Account Number, Information Form.If you have not created a profile with us, you will be prompted to do so before you can complete this online form. After City of Hoover Revenue Department staff review, you will be issued a Jurisdiction Account number, enabling you to pay electronically at the Alabama Department of Revenue's website.

Be advised Hoover Liquor Tax and Residential Lease Taxes are not payable through the Alabama Department of Revenue website.

5. What is the Jurisdiction Account (JDA) number referred on the Alabama Dept. of Revenue's website in regards to paying sales and other local taxes online? If I don't have a JDA, how do I get one?: If you have a current business license the JDA is the same as your Business License Control Number, located in the uppermost left corner of the business license. Look for that number in the very top left corner. This number will be five digits or less.
